I accidentally fell in love with surfing a few years ago when I stumbled on a little-known and amazing surf break while on a retreat. It remains one of the happiest accidents of my life. Over and over, I have received numerous nuggets of insight from surf instructors. What they have shared with me has profoundly impacted and informed my life … on and off my board. One such nugget is about riding “switchfoot” – which is just what it sounds and changing up how you do things (more in the reading excerpt).
This switchfooting is powerful stuff, a force for feel-good change. So, my friend, if you are inclined to overdo, if you find yourself pressed, often running late or up too late, try this switchfoot stance and BE still a bit more. Watch for patterns in your thoughts and actions that tell you the more you do, the more valuable you are. Switchfoot it and BE free of that burdensome belief.
You have great worth,
you are valuable,
you are loved
because of who you are,
not because of what you do.
Bask in it and believe it.
Be Still. Surrender.
There is no need to do anything right now.
Here, you need only BE.
Here, you are loved.
Here, you have great value. Here, you belong.
Ponder. Go Deeper.
What would feel good to switchfoot a bit or a lot in your life—old patterns of self-talk, of how you relate to others, of how you start and end your days, of how you engage with the Sacred, or something else entirely? Write about what comes to you. Imagine moving through life in this new way, changing up your stance, being fueled in this different way, opening to a brand new possibility in life. Watch the magic happen.
How’s your energy these days—in your thoughts, words, and what you are doing? Are you hustling too much, frenetic and forcing your way through life? Or are you rocking your rhythm? Ponder what’s working and what’s not.
Choose one area to switchfoot today. Small or big. Mix it up. Trust that what you choose is the thing for you to do anew. Remember, it isn’t easy to do at first. But, whew! With practice, it will begin to feel oh, so good.
