WOMEN COLLABORATE GLOBALLY ON A NEW BOOK ABOUT THE HORRORS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND WHAT IS BEING DONE BY EVERYDAY, ORDINARY PEOPLE TO BRING FREEDOM AND HOPE TO ALL
DENVER, CO – January 31, 2022 | Imagine if one by one, women and girls as young as nine years old began disappearing from your neighborhood. Imagine you felt powerless to stop it and one day simply accepted that this was the way things were. For tens of thousands of people in Nepal, where 20,000 women and children are trafficked out of Nepal each year, this is a traumatic reality. This is modern slavery.
When Denver author Sarah Davison-Tracy met a circle of Nepali women who had escaped the sex trafficking industry after years of enslavement, she was compelled to help them tell their stories. As a human rights activist and author, she became impassioned to shed light on the shocking statistics and personal narratives. That is how the process of writing her new book, No Longer Untouchable: A Story of Human Trafficking, Heroism, and Hope, began.
The book, released on January 13, 2022, is the first book written in English about the Badi people who are defined by their position as the lowest class in Nepal’s caste system. Women born into the Badi caste are born into a life of prostitution that has been inescapable … until now. As the five women shared their stories with Davison-Tracy, they illuminated the complex factors that fuel human trafficking and why they believed that, in order for their stories to be heard, they had to be told by someone outside of the caste system.
“The Badi people are called ‘untouchable’ because they are ostracized by society. They have no access to education, work or other basic human rights, but instead face routine discrimination and horrific abuse.” says Davison-Tracy. “Their voices are often diminished by others. I hope this book is a microphone that makes their voices heard and valued around the world.”
Devisara Hannah Badi, who is an activist in Nepal and the lead storyteller in the book, goes on to say, “When the Badi people speak, no one listens. Having our stories told from the perspective of a western woman will be like a bomb of truth going off in my country. My hope is that it is a catalyst to the change we are working so hard for.”
In 1962, caste system discrimination was outlawed in Nepal; however it remains prevalent along with the hate crimes against members of the lowest caste group – the Dalit. The Badi people are at the bottom of this caste group. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to trafficking and most who are trafficked die in enslaved circumstances.
No Longer Untouchable: A Story of Human Trafficking, Heroism, and Hope brings the reader into the appalling reality of modern-day slavery as Devisara Hannah Badi and her sisters tell their stories. They have each overcome unimaginable odds to survive, and today they are bravely fighting to bring freedom, hope, and love into the darkest corners of the world.
In the book, Davison-Tracy writes, “To those of you at the end of your rope or discouraged, we hope that as you read, you experience your own resilience, strength, and significance…To those of you open and eager to make a difference in the world, we hope that you respond to the global realities of injustice…To those who are impassioned and committed leaders in communities, businesses, organizations and governments around the world, we hope that you expand your influence and become even greater catalysts for justice than ever before.”
