WE ARE INTERCONNECTED. We belong to each other. We are family. Enlarging our vision for and commitment to “strangers” in our colossal human family changes our thoughts, actions, and heart … sometimes in everyday and small ways and at other times in life-altering epic ways.

Pope Francis spoke with simple and powerful wisdom about this inextricable interconnection in a TED talk entitled, Why the Only Future Worth Building Includes Everyone:

How wonderful would it be, while we discover faraway planets,
to rediscover the needs of the brothers and sisters
orbiting around us.

All it takes is for one person to stop and help,
and change the lives of people around us,
turning a small ripple into a revolution …

Through the darkness of today’s conflicts,
each and every one of us can become a bright candle,
a reminder that light will overcome darkness,
and never the other way around.

When we live as though we belong to each other, comPASSIONate attention and responsibility for one another grows – whether with those unknown or known to us. Can you imagine the mighty movement that would be unleashed if, one by one, we each opened up our minds and hearts to those we don’t yet know, love, or call friend or family? This simple and humble opening cultivates the conditions for change in our conversations, choices, and actions.
