Everyday Philanthropy

As part of our call to all to be an everyday philanthropist, each month we spotlight a project or program in the world. Our partner’s focus is in at least one of these five categories: human rights, education, health, community emergencies, and art-activism. I am blessed with a huge pool of changemakers in my community – so there is never a lack of trusted organizations with whom to partner.

This sort of “everyday philanthropy” is about an unrestrained generosity rooted in the reality of your everyday life. Generosity feels good. It is part of your purpose on the planet. It finds ways to share with others the treasure trove of whatever you have and whatever you love. It makes a difference with your small and large acts alike … living with a commitment and connection to your sisters and brothers near and far.

I get it: These stories and the very invitation to give and to BE philanthropists isn’t always comfortable. Or easy. Sometimes it’s the world’s pain pricking our hearts that wakes us up to see – and say yes! – to our destiny.

With all my heart, I believe that the lights of our lives turn ON when we find ways to love, care, and serve each other … especially those on the margins, the outsiders, the hungry, the sick, the vulnerable. So, pay attention to what makes your heart thrum, brings tears to your eyes, a knot in your stomach … I believe those are the things that are often clues to our next steps and leaps … to our purpose on the planet … and is what makes our lives glow.

So, today and together, let’s dispute the suggestion that philanthropy is an exclusive club only for those deemed wealthy. Today and together, let’s dispute that the only thing that matters and makes a difference is giving in “big” ways. The movement that will be unleashed when we live as generously unrestrained philanthropists WILL light up the world.

You are loved. We belong to each other. Let’s standTALL together and light up the world! xo, -Sarah DT

SEPTEMBER, 2020 | The Exodus Road

Crisis Care for Sex Trafficking Survivors

  • Project: Provide one year of salary plus expenses for one female national crisis care worker in India to work with The Exodus Road’s teams in India. This is critically important as the actual rescue missions are often very traumatic for the girls. The social worker can meet immediate needs of the sex trafficking survivors, help them as they give their testimony to police, and give them comfort during the process. This is a vital and tangible way to compassionately companion our sisters who have been bought, sold, abused, and enslaved.

  • Goal: $4,000

  • Country: India

The Exodus Road’s mission …

Exodus Road is a global organization strategically fighting human trafficking by working with police to gather evidence, facilitate rescue missions, and empower aftercare for survivors. They also offer trainings and technology to equip others in the work on the front lines. LEARN MORE

Stories from the Front Lines. TER’s operatives fight human trafficking by going into the darkest corners of the world to gather evidence of human trafficking. They then work with police to facilitate rescue missions. It is noble, gritty work. Here are their stories. WATCH

WHY this is important now …

Human trafficking is a significant global issue today. Many people don’t realize that there are more modern day slaves today than at any other point in human history – some estimates are at 40 million people affected. These are some of the most forgotten and oftentimes abused people in our world today. To date, The Exodus Road (TER) has gathered evidence, provided investigative data and technology to directly support local police in the arrests of nearly 600 traffickers and helped rescue nearly 1500 survivors.

Bags of Love

This is a celebratory community service opportunity.

We all have or will need to be pulled up by another, encouraged. It is an invitation to stop, see, smile, connect, love … to embrace that we belong to each other. Let’s serve those on the streets of our cities, see with fresh eyes, and celebrate community.

Over the past decade, I’ve had the joy of creating Bags of Love with my own children and their friends. Sometimes we’ve hosted gatherings with oodles of kids in our home, created them with classmates at school, or as a family around our dining table. When friends in other cities around the United States heard about what we were doing, they began asking for help to create their own Bags of Love gatherings. What fun it has been to share our ideas with them and to hear about their beautiful and innovative gatherings.

And now, YOU are a part of the Bags of Love community. Welcome! We’re so glad you’re here.

As you watch, be thinking about your art, your gifts … that bring hope and joy to the world. This song is about an artist using his gift of music to share some love with homeless folks in California. In the video, he gives them makeovers, haircuts, new clothes. He holds a mirror up to their beauty … and they love what they see!

This beautyFULL song is also part of the PoP (Place of Pause) in Soulfully Ablaze. Read this excerpt from Live Ablaze and take a PoP today to experience surrender and inspiration so you can uncover more of your part to make a difference locally and globally, together.
